This page provides download access to some 70 project documents or document sets produced during the course of primary research activities (2010-13) for our critical edition of Livingstone’s 1871 Field Diary. We offer the documents as a single comprehensive collection and grouped by area of project endeavor. As a bonus, we also offer the entire Livingstone Spectral Image Archive (except for archival images and MD5 checksum files) as a single ZIP file.

Introduction    Top

Research for our critical edition of Livingstone's 1871 Field Diary has resulted in the production of a significant amount of supporting documentation. This documentation encompasses all aspects of the project and, as a whole, offers an intimate glimpse into project development. The project team has curated this documentation in a handful of ways. First, the team has organized the documentation into categories of project endeavor in order to facilitate study of individual files or file sequences. As part of this, we have removed duplicate or variant files with the goal of being representative (rather than exhaustive) about our research. Second, documentation files have been renamed to reflect the contents and actual order of research activities (although, as users will find, research activities did not always take an organized form and involved much trial and error). Finally, we have lightly edited the documentation to remove personal information or other sensitive material such as passwords.

We release this documentation under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 3.0 Unported license in keeping with Livingstone Online's general mission of promoting knowledge transfer and conducting transparent, publicly-accountable research.

Complete Project Documentation    Top

Download all curated project documents (346 MB) related to the production of the critical edition of Livingstone's 1871 Field Diary organized as a series of subdirectories that together encompass every aspect of development.

Bonus: Download the entire original Livingstone Spectral Image Archive (external link) from 2012 – except for archival images and MD5 checksum files – as a single ZIP file (588 MB). The archive includes full documentation, all supporting files, and all the website files that constitute the Archive itself as well as the first editions of Livingstone's 1871 Field Diary (UCLA Digital Library, 2011-13) and Letter from Bambarre (UCLA Digital Library, 2010-11). The missing archival images and MD5 files are now available in enhanced versions through our spectral image collection.
